Softball standouts Byrd, Engle sign with local universities

Seniors Lela Byrd and Kyndal Engle signed to play softball for East Tennessee State University and Milligan University, respectively, during a Nov. 12 ceremony at Unicoi County High School. Lela Byrd is the daughter of Jason and Rachelle Byrd of Johnson City. She has a brother, Marshall Byrd. Her grandparents are Jackie and Debra Elliott, David Byrd and Jane Bishop Byrd. "I chose ETSU because of the incredible athletic and academic programs, as well as the deep family history I have there," Byrd said. "The coaching staff creates such a positive and supportive environment, and being close to home makes it even more special," she added. "Ever since I was a little girl, I've dreamed of becoming a Buccaneer," Byrd said. "My dad played baseball at ETSU, and growing up, we would always try to catch a game in between my school and travel ball tournaments. My aunt Michelle Byrd has worked at ETSU my entire life, so the campus truly feels like home." The desire to have her family and friends watch and support her and the Buccaneers also influenced her decision. "My Papaw Byrd told me, 'Lela, if you stay close to home, I'll be able to come and watch you play,' and that meant so much to me," she said. "I also want to be close enough to cheer on my brother when he plays." Byrd added, "ETSU is home for me in every way — academically, athletically, and personally — and I couldn't be more excited to continue my journey as a Buccaneer." Kyndal Engle also shared thoughts on her signing to play softball for the Buffaloes of Milligan University. "When I began my recruiting process, I knew I wanted to stay close to home," Engle said. "Stepping on campus at Milligan made me realize I was exactly where I needed to be." She added, "Coach (Cassie) Fortner has already made me feel like family." Engle is the daughter of Daniel and Amy Engle of Erwin. She has a brother, Ty Engle. Her grandparents are James and Teresa Engle, Fred Lewis and Carol Bailey. "I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity and knowing I'm gonna be part of a great softball program excites me for the future," Engle said.
