Midnight Traynhams to perform at Carter Fold

HILTONS -- Old-time music is on tap at the Carter Fold this week, with a first-time musical guest.The Midnight Traynhams will perform at the Fold for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m.Floyd County master musician and luthier Mac Tranyham is best known for his banjo building and playing, as well as fine fiddling. He has been playing and teaching traditional music in Floyd County for decades and is a wealth of knowledge about the history of mountain music.Tranyham is a deep-rooted native of Virginia. Born in the Tidewater area in 1954, he was musically inclined at a young age, growing up with musical parents in the 1960s in Oxford, North Carolina. The Traynham family later moved to Nottoway County, Virginia.Tranyham attended Hampden-Sydney College and later Virginia Tech. Playing both electric and acoustic guitar, he soon chose acoustic guitar. He is a songwriter, playing both banjo and fiddle. He was drawn to the sound of the banjo and began playing three-finger style.While attending Virginia Tech, he made his first visit to the Galax Old Time Fiddlers' Convention. This led him to begin visiting elderly mountain musicians who were willing to share their music with interested young people and fueled his lifelong love and devotion to mountain music.Accompanying Tranyham will be his daughter, Hanna, and some fine musicians from Floyd on guitar and bass.
