Fletcher charged with Birchfield's murder

A multi-agency investigation into the disappearance of and search for Victor Birchfield by the Carter County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation concluded this morning.During a press conference, Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley and Johnson County Sheriff Clifton Worley spoke to the media, announcing that the human remains found in a secluded area in Butler in Carter County, TN, on July 5 were positively identified as Birchfield."Billy Fletcher, an escaped inmate from Carter County jail, is now officially charged with Birchfield's murder," Sheriff Worley stated during the press conference.Fletcher has been arraigned in Johnson County Criminal Court and will appear in court on December 13, 2024.Worley added that the dedication to justice continues, and "our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved."Carter County Sheriff Fraley had no further comment on the situation, but Worley emphasized that the remains were sent to the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center for an autopsy. The reason for the identification taking a bit longer had to do with the condition of the remains "beyond facial recognition."The announcement may be a closure for many of Birchfield's family members and close friends who, upon the revelation of a body found in Butler, had the "awful feeling that the search may have come to an end."Birchfield's disappearance and Fletcher's escape roused suspicion that Fletcher left Birchfield's body at the Butler location.The search for the body was a joint operation by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Carter County Sheriff's Office, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.The Johnson County Sheriff's Office was involved with the search for Birchfield and Fletcher from the start because Fletcher lived right on the border between Carter County and Johnson County and was reportedly familiar with the area.
