Master plan charts path forward for Crockett Birthplace Park

David Crockett Birthplace State Park has completed a long-awaited Master Plan outlining the vision for rebuilding the park following severe flood damage, a milestone park officials say reflects both community input and renewed momentum for the site's future. The Master Plan serves as a broad framework for how the park could be redeveloped, including future amenities, interpretive priorities and infrastructure needs, according to Park Ranger Joe Nowotarski. "The master plan is a 10,000-foot view of what the rebirth of David Crockett Birthplace State Park will look like," Nowotarski said. "It's a conceptual design of what amenities we're going to offer, the things we're going to spotlight and a refocusing of our mission, which is to tell the story of David Crockett and the early American frontier in which he inhabited." The plan follows extensive damage caused by flooding from Hurricane Helene and was shaped by months of public engagement. Nowotarski said the process was intentionally inclusive, bringing together a wide range of park users to help determine what the park's future should look like. "The amount of community involvement in this process was staggering, and it was deliberate," he said. "We wanted to make sure that everyone's voices were heard, not just historians, but campers, river users, fishermen, people who walk their dogs here, picnickers — just everyone who uses the park." Public surveys and meetings allowed participants to rank desired features, giving the final plan a data-driven foundation, according to Nowotarski. He said that among the highest priorities were telling Crockett's story through expanded interpretation, a visitor center with a museum and a reconstructed 1780s-era frontier homestead similar to what Crockett would have known. "The campground was incredibly popular, river access was incredibly popular — and then recreational amenities like a playground and a kids' water feature," he said. "Don't forget the hiking. Those were probably the biggest things that rose to the top." The completed document spans about 80 pages, and is available to the public through the park's press release and social media. Nowotarski said the plan's detail is intentional, as it will guide everything from future programming decisions to architectural design. "This master plan will inform everything from programming to cost estimates to being able to hand it to an architect and say, 'Design this building,'" he said. "It also illustrates the methodology of how we came to these conclusions, with surveys, public input meetings and a steering committee representing different user groups." With the plan finalized, the next phase involves securing funding to move forward. Nowotarski said the park has already received hurricane relief and insurance funds, but additional capital funding will require legislative approval. "The next step is acquiring the capital funding necessary," he said. "We're hopeful to be a budget item when the legislature meets and decides the budget for next year. I can't say it will be, but I'm pretty confident." If funding is secured, he said the project would move into detailed architectural and engineering design, including utilities, roads and other foundational infrastructure. Throughout the recovery process, Nowotarski said the park has benefited from strong local and statewide support, which staff hope to maintain while the park remains closed. "We're very appreciative of the support of the community," he said. "They really rallied behind the park when it needed it most. Even though we can't just swing the gates open yet, we're excited to keep engaging the community, hosting special events, leading hikes and going into schools." He added that the goal is to keep the park's story alive during the rebuilding period. "We want to keep the flame of David Crockett burning during this time before it can finally come back home," Nowotarski said.
