County teachers get work contract for first time in 1975

Fifty Years Ago 1975 Unicoi County's 177 teachers got a master work contract for the first time in history with the county's board of education. Erwin and Unicoi County represent the first non-urban area to have a Tennessee Education Association affiliate, the Unicoi County Education Association, help nail down a contract for the teachers. ••• The Capitol Theatre advertised Disney's "The Apple Dumpling Gang" as coming soon to its screen. The Holiday Drive-in advertised Warren Beatty in "Shampoo." Forty Years Ago 1985 Julie Gaddy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Gaddy, was crowned the 1985 Apple Queen during the 1985 Unicoi County Apple Festival. Runners-up were JoAnn Garland and Kathy Lovette. ••• Jim Rule Chevrolet announced that their Blue Devil Players of the Week were David Whaley for offense and Robin Lynch for defense. ••• The Savings Center advertised some specials, including a 6.4-ounce of Aquafresh toothpaste for $1.29, a 2-liter bottle of Pepsi or related products for $1.19 and a 2-ounce container of Nescafe coffee for $1. Thirty Years Ago 1995 State bicentennial bricks were for sale to local citizens to show their Tennessee pride. Order forms for the bricks could be picked up at the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce or the Unicoi County Public Library. ••• The Blue Devil Football Players of the Week were Matt Swinehart for defense and Shaun Edwards for offense. Sponsors for Player of the Week were The Elms restaurant and cafeteria and Erwin National Bank. Twenty Years Ago 2005 Winners in the Unicoi County Apple Festival Pageant included Miss Apple Festival Queen Brittany Byrd, Teen Miss Apple Festival Ashley Houston, Pre-teen Miss Apple Festival Leah Owens and Wee Miss Apple Festival Hollie Hollis. ••• White's Fresh Foods advertised an Under the Big Tent Sale that featured all items for $1. Ten Years Ago 2015 The Unicoi County High School Class of 1950 celebrated their 65th class reunion with a trip to the Clinchfield Railroad Museum in Erwin. ••• The UCHS girls soccer team lost to the District 1A/2A-leading University High School. ••• The Unicoi Business Alliance, the U.S. Forest Service along with a host of local businesses sponsored the third annual Pinnacle Trail Challenge and Hunger Hike.
