Sixty Years Ago 1965 The Erwin Civilian Club bestowed "Citizen of the Year" status on a married couple, Mr. And Mrs. Robert S. Williamson during the annual Civitan Ladies Night Banquet. ••• Publix Super Markets advertised six cans of Campbell's soup (vegetable or chicken noodle) for $1, T-bone steaks for 89 cents a pound and a 4-pound container of pure lard for 69 cents. ••• The Unicoi County High School Blue Devil basketball team dropped their first two basketball games to Lamar and Jonesborough. ••• Capitol Theatre advertised a Thanksgiving showing of The Beatles in "Help." The Holiday Drive-in promoted Walt Disney's "The Monkey's Uncle." Fifty Years Ago 1975 Ernest English was named Unicoi County's 1975 Conservation Farmer Of the Year at the Soil Conservation District's annual awards banquet held at the Elm's Restaurant. ••• The Savings Center promoted gift suggestions for a merry Christmas, including a Hamilton Beach slow cooker for $13.99, a Monopoly board game for $3.99, a Mayfair 8-track tape player with AM/FM radio for $29 and ladies lounging pajamas for $3.99. ••• The Capitol Theatre promoted a showing of Robert Redford in "The Great Waldo Pepper." The Holiday Drive-in advertised a showing of Don Knotts in Walt Disney's "Apple Dumpling Gang." Forty Years Ago 1985 The UCHS Blue Devil basketball team won the season opener against Elizabethton, 47-45. The team was coached by Mike Williams. ••• Four Erwin churches – First Christian, Ninth Street Baptist, Calvary Baptist and Shallow Ford Baptist –were scheduled to hold Thanksgiving services. ••• The Erwin Record reported that East Tennessee State University was celebrating its 75th anniversary with a series of exhibits on the history of ETSU at various campus locations. Thirty Years Ago 1995 Pauline Vaughn, former administrator of the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, died at age 83 on Sunday, Nov. 26. She had served as administrator for 30 years before retiring in 1982. She came to the hospital to help prepare for its official opening on Jan. 18, 1953, and stayed on until her retirement. ••• The UCHS girls basketball team coached by Glenn Fisher opened the season with a 60-18 victory over Tri-Cities Christian. The boys basketball team, coached by Keith Turner, also won 88-41 over Tri-Cities Christian. ••• Capitol Theatre promoted "Goldeneye," a James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan. Twenty Years Ago 2005 Two Unicoi County men – Lou Thornberry and Robin Lynch – worked to bring Buccaneer football back to East Tennessee State University. Lynch played as linebacker and nose guard for ETSU from 1986 to 1989. Thornberry described himself as an alumni and longtime follower of ETSU football. "As a graduate and former player, I was extremely disappointed when the program was cancelled," Lynch said. "From the time I started play football, my goal was to be on the team at ETSU." Lynch and Thornberry were part of the Buc Football and Friends Foundation. ••• The UCHS Blue Devil basketball team beat Elizabethton, 63-57, in the championship game of the Hardee's Classic at David Crockett High School. The team was coached by John English. Ten Years Ago 2015 Country Depot advertised dates for Christmas open houses. The Erwin gift shop, which billed itself as "your Christmas gift headquarters," was located on North Main Avenue. ••• Erwin's St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Mission sent several adults and teens to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. ••• State Sen.
