Thanksgiving in the mountains of Unicoi County

Thanksgiving has a rich history dating back to the 1621 celebration of the Mayflower Pilgrims. I learned about it in the first grade and was taught how to draw a turkey, what Pilgrims were and how Native Americans contributed by bringing deer and other game for the celebration. The date(s) when this occurred was likely after harvest, sometime between September and November. It wasn't a national holiday until President Lincoln's time in office.Thanksgivings occurred on various days until Abraham Lincoln standardized the date with a proclamation in 1863, which placed Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November. The holiday, more or less, stayed on that Thursday until politics got involved. Congress complained it did not give enough time between then and Christmas to shop for presents. Bending to this pressure, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a Proclamation setting Thanksgiving Day as the fourth Thursday in November. It has stayed there since. However, with the fourth Thursday varying from year to year, Thanksgiving can occur as early as Nov. 22 or as late as Nov. 28.Macy's Parade, football games and a plump turkey with all the trimmings symbolizes Thanksgiving across the country. While Thanksgiving is not a Biblical holiday, thanks are given, by most, to our creator for the blessings of the past year and hopes for the coming year.In Unicoi County, Thanksgiving doesn't arrive with fanfare – it steals in like morning mist over Buffalo Mountain. It's not just a date on the calendar, but a rhythm in the land, a hush in the hollows, warmth in the woodsmoke.We don't need parades to know it's near. We feel it in the last apples sold at the farmers market, in the hush of the Nolichucky River, in the way neighbors wave a little longer before heading home. The Apple Festival may be weeks behind us, but its spirit lingers – gratitude stitched into quilts, baked into pies and sung in the harmonies of bluegrass bands. And though the pine forests have thinned, thanks to some destructive beetles, and time – the hardwoods still blaze with color with their remaining leaves, reminding us that resilience is its own kind of thanksgiving.We give thanks not just, for what we have, but for what we've endured. The Nolichucky, once a quiet companion to our autumn walks, turned fierce in the wake of Hurricane Helene, washing away bridges, businesses and lives. Industrial Drive still bears the scars. Some families are still rebuilding, still remembering. Yet even in grief, the mountains hold us. The hardwoods rise, the river calms and the people of Unicoi County gather again – proof that gratitude can coexist with sorrow, and that memory is kind of healing.Thanksgiving here is a harvest of memory. It's the stories passed around the table like beans and cornbread – tales of Pawpaw's first deer, of Mammaw's blueberry jelly of the time my wife and I delivered meals to people that were not able physically, or financially to afford a Thanksgiving meal.Returning to church for our own meal, there was nothing left. We went home and laughed as we ate our microwave dinners. The year the snow came early and stayed late. It's the quiet reverence of church pews, the laughter of kin folks reunited, the solemn joy of knowing we've made it through another season.So this Thanksgiving, let us gather not only to eat, but also to listen to the wind in the oaks, and to stories of our elders, to the silence between verses.
