Erwin Utilities undertakes state-funded sewer rehabilitation

State-funded sewer rehabilitation work underway in Erwin is now marked by information signs along South Elm Avenue, marking broader upgrades across the utility system. Project signs were recently installed along South Elm Avenue to meet Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation requirements for state-funded infrastructure projects, according to a press release from Erwin Utilities. Erwin Utilities crews and contractors are working on sanitary sewer rehabilitation projects aimed at maintaining the system and improving the collection and treatment of wastewater from homes and businesses. The signs identify sewer rehabilitation work supported through the American Rescue Plan State Water Infrastructure Grant Program, administered by TDEC under the Water Infrastructure for Tennessee initiative. The grants support upgrades to aging sewer infrastructure intended to improve system reliability, environmental protection and service to the community, according to the release. Each sign includes information on funding sources, grant amounts and participating agencies, as required for projects receiving state and federal assistance. Erwin Utilities emphasized the signage does not indicate new construction at each posted location, but instead marks the overall project area and funding participation. Project funding comes from three American Rescue Plan State Water Infrastructure grants totaling more than $11 million, with awards listed at $9.8 million, $706,000 and $628,000. The rehabilitation work includes targeted improvements at multiple locations throughout the service area, not limited to South Elm Avenue. The projects are designed to address inflow and infiltration, reduce system overflows and extend the life of existing sewer assets, according to the release. Sewer rehabilitation areas include Rock Creek, North Main Avenue, Elliot Avenue, Smith Avenue, Staley Lane, Witcher Lane, Boone Lane, Rock Creek Road, the Vinton Avenue area, South Main Avenue, Vinton Avenue, South Elm Avenue, Robertson Street, Short Street and Academy Street.
