Fifty Years Ago1976Unicoi County Election Commission Registrar Virginia Booth and her staff took a close look at voter participation in the most recent election. Booth also posted the official Unicoi County election records, marking on the voting cards of each registrant when they had last voted. Anyone who had not voted for the past four years was to be notified that their names would be dropped from election rolls unless they reregistered before the 1976 elections. •••The Blue Devils split two basketball games, beating Morristown East, 72-66, and losing to Elizabethton, 54-50. •••Keesecker Appliance and Furniture advertised a half-price truckload sale of Bemco mattresses. Forty Years Ago1986Summers-Taylor was awarded a contract for a major highway project in the Canah Chapel community. The company submitted the low bid of $4,093,297.62 for the project to make three lanes on the road from the Erwin bypass to Main Avenue at Second Street and construction of the bridge overpass.•••Sponsor Dari-Ace and Jim Rule Chervolet named UCHS athletes Kim McInturff and Trey Whitson the Blue Devil basketball players of the week. •••Furniture store Ball Bros. advertised a 24-hour sale on such items as an entertainment center for $99, an oak cedar chest for $99 and a marble-topped fern stand for $5.88. Thirty Years Ago1996Gov. Don Sundquist issued a proclamation encouraging Tennesseans to show their support for the state's Bicentennial Capitol Mall by purchasing special bricks. "It is appropriate for citizens of Tennessee during this Bicentennial year to participate in this exciting celebration," Sundquist said.•••Anthony's Italian Ristorante on North Main advertised specials, including an all-you-can-eat spaghetti meals for $2.99, one large supreme pizza with six toppings for $7.99 and a 14-inch pepperoni passion blaster pizza for $4.99. Don Dutton, a member of the Unaka post of the American Legion, said that the students were working hard on their presentations. Ten Years Ago2016A public forum was held by the Unicoi County Board of Education to determine the future location for Love Chapel Elementary School. According to Director of Schools John English, the lease on modular buildings that housed the school was about to expire.•••The Unicoi County High School basketball team defeated Elizabeton, 54-37, to take second place in the Three Rivers Conference.
