Unaka Bike Park receives new bike repair, air pump station

A new bike repair and air pump station is now available at Unaka Bike Park through a project led by the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce and state partners. The project was made possible through funding secured by the Chamber through the Tennessee Department of Health's Active Living Grant, according to a press release issued Jan. 22 by the Chamber. The new bike repair station — often referred to as a "bike fix-it station"— provides cyclists with access to tools and an air pump to make minor repairs and inflate tires, enhancing safety, convenience and accessibility for both local riders and visiting outdoor enthusiasts. The installation is a direct outcome of the Active Living Workshop Assessment, coordinated by the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. The workshop brought together community leaders, local governments, outdoor recreation partners and residents to assess walkability, bikeability and opportunities for "easy win" projects that support healthier, more connected communities. One of the priorities identified through that assessment was the need for bike repair stations and cyclist-supportive infrastructure, according to the release. "This project is a great example of how planning, collaboration and small targeted investments can have a big impact," said Amanda Delp, executive director of the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce. "The Chamber doesn't just promote our community — we actively work to improve it. By securing funding, coordinating partners and moving ideas from planning into action, we're helping build a healthier, more vibrant Unicoi County." The Chamber also emphasized the tourism significance of the project through Visit Unicoi County, the official Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for Unicoi County and a Chamber of Commerce initiative. Visit Unicoi County works to promote tourism, encourage visitation and support assets like Unaka Bike Park that attract outdoor recreation travelers and adventure tourists from across the region, according to the release.
