DARK TURN OF MIND: Band to present seasonal concert at Capitol Hall

Capitol Hall in downtown Erwin will host the unique sounds of Dark Turn Of Mind at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, in celebration of the spooky season. Band member Melissa Hyman spoke to The Erwin Record about the group. "Dark Turn of Mind Band is a collaboration between established Asheville musicians Hannah Kaminer, Ross Montsinger, Ryan Furstenberg and me," Hyman said. "The four of us have been making music together for many years, in many contexts and configurations." Hyman added that she, Kaminer and Furstenberg are all singer-songwriters and bandleaders with multiple projects, while Montsinger is a highly sought-after drummer with an exceptionally subtle and musical approach to the kit. "We bring diverse influences to the table, with our origin stories ranging from the New York City suburbs, through eastern North Carolina and deep into the hills of western North Carolina," Hyman said. She elaborated on the new project the musicians are currently undertaking. "In the fall of 2025 we started this new project focused on what we've been calling Haunted Americana," Hyman said. "Fittingly, Dark Turn Of Mind band only rises from its sepulchral slumber to haunt the populace during spooky season," Hyman said. She added that the musicians have dusted off a number of favorites from last October's tour and added some exciting new material for this year's tour. The band's set is mostly classic cover songs, with a dose of eerie originals. "Audiences can expect to hear an array of genres," Hyman said. "We draw on the work of Billie Eilish, Nina Simone, Bobbie Gentry, Gillian Welch, OutKast, the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack and more to create a set list with killer vibes, broad appeal and deep roots." Audiences who want a special way to celebrate the Halloween season will enjoy what that band has in store for attendees. "At our show at Capitol Hall on Oct. 17, audience members can expect surprising new arrangements of old favorites, gorgeous three-part harmonies and superb musical chemistry," Hyman said. "There will be dad jokes and other impromptu foolishness," she added. Hyman said the band feels this helps balance the darkness of some of the material, and the fact they cannot stop making puns. "We're excited for our very first show in Erwin, and thrilled to play this beautiful new venue," Hyman said. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, and doors to the theater will open at 6:30 p.m. Capitol Hall is located at 105 N. Main, Erwin.
